Geek 101: Justice Society of America

February 5, 2010

The O.G of Superhero teams.

The Justice Society of America, commonly referred to as the JSA, was the big DC Comics, then two seperate companies (National Comics and All-American Comics), Superhero team during the Golden Age of comics and was the first team of its kind in comics.

The team first appeared in All Star Comics #3 in 1940. At that time the team’s roster consisted of Doctor Fate, Hour-Man, Sandman and the Spectre from National Comics and Atom, Green Lantern (Alan Scott), Hawkman, and The Flash (Jay Garrick) from National Comics, Batman and Superman were considered honorary members of the team as they had their own books. Wonder Woman eventually joined the team, but only as the team’s secretary. The last Golden Age appearance of the Society was in All Star Comics #57, the title was change to All Star Western with the next issue.

The Justice Society remained untouched until 1961, when the new Silver Age Flash (Barry Allen) met Jay
Garrick, the Golden Age Flash. That issue revealed that the Justice Society existed on a parallel earth, Earth-Two. From then on the JSA and the Justice League of America teamed up periodically throughout the Silver Age. Eventually, with the reboot from Crisis on Infinite Earths, the DC multi-verse became a single universe and the JSA became the elder team of the universe and began training younger heroes, a role that the team still maintains.

The JSA has appeared few times in other mediums than comics

The two part episode of Justice League, titled Legends, had the League sent into an alternate universe where there was a superhero team named the Justice Guild of America, an homage to the JSA. Multiple members of the JSA went on appear in the sequel series, Justice League Unlimited, including Wildcat, Stargirl, Mr. Terrific, Hawkman, and Doctor Fate.

In the opening credits of Justice League: The New Frontier, the JSA appears briefly.

The Justice Society of America is set to appear in the eleventh and twelfth episodes of the ninth season of Smallville, Society and Legends, which will air as two hour event called Absolute Justice tonight on the CW.
